The term Romanian is sometimes used also in a more general sense, which envelops four languages or dialects: Daco-Romanian, Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian, and Istro-Romanian. The four languages, whose mutual intelligibility is difficult, are the offspring of the Romance varieties spoken both to the north and to south of Danube, before the settlement of the Slavonian tribes south of the river: Daco-Romanian in the north, Aromanian and Megleno-Romanian in the south, whereas Istro-Romanian is believed to be the offspring of an 11th-century migration from Romania.
Baltimore
Baltimore, with its 2020 population of 585,708, is the most populous city in Maryland, the fourth largest in the Mid-Atlantic region, and the 30th largest city in the U.S. In 1851, the Constitution of Maryland declared Baltimore an independent city, making it the most populous independent city in the U.S today. The estimated population of the Baltimore metropolitan area as of 2021 was 2,838,327, positioning it as the 20th largest metropolitan area in the U.S. Located approximately 40 miles north-northeast of Washington, D.C., Baltimore is a key city in the Washington-Baltimore combined statistical area (CSA). The CSA, with its estimated 2021 population of 9,946,526, is the third largest in the nation.
The region where Baltimore now stands was once the hunting grounds of the Susquehannock Native Americans, who mostly resided further northwest prior to European colonization. The Port of Baltimore was established by colonists from the Province of Maryland in 1706 to facilitate the tobacco trade with Europe. They also set up the Town of Baltimore in 1729. The city saw the introduction of its first printing press and newspapers in the mid-18th century, thanks to Nicholas Hasselbach and William Goddard.
