Estonian belongs to the Finnic branch of the Uralic languages, along with Finnish, Karelian, and other nearby languages. The Uralic languages do not belong to the Indo-European languages. Estonian is distantly related to Hungarian. Estonian has been influenced by Swedish, German (initially Middle Low German, later also standard German), and Russian, though it is not related to them genetically.
Like Finnish and Hungarian, Estonian is a somewhat agglutinative language, but unlike them, it has lost the vowel harmony of the hypothetical Proto-Uralic language, although in older texts the vowel harmony can still be recognized.
Detroit
Detroit, the most populous city in the state of Michigan, is also the largest city on the U.S.-Canada border. As the administrative center of Wayne County, Detroit had a population of 639,111 as per the 2020 census, positioning it as the 27th most populous city in the U.S. Its metro area, referred to as Metro Detroit, houses 4.3 million people, which ranks it as the second-largest in the Midwest after the Chicago metropolitan area and 14th-largest in the U.S. Recognized as a vital cultural hub, Detroit is renowned for its contributions to music, art, architecture, design, and its significant history in the automotive industry. In 2022, Time magazine included Detroit in their list of the fifty World's Greatest Places to visit.
Detroit, a major port situated on the Detroit River, is one of the four primary straits linking the Great Lakes system to the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Anchoring the second-largest regional economy in the Midwest, surpassed only by Chicago and exceeding Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Detroit holds the 14th-largest economy in the U.S. The city is famously known as the heart of the U.S. automobile industry with the "Big Three" auto manufacturers - General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis North America (Chrysler) all having their headquarters in Metro Detroit. Detroit and its Canadian counterpart, Windsor, are connected via a highway tunnel, railway tunnel, and the Ambassador Bridge, the latter being the second-busiest international crossing in North America, after San Diego–Tijuana. An additional connection, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, is currently under construction and is slated to provide a full freeway-to-freeway link. The completion of this new bridge is anticipated by 2024.
