Italian derives from Latin. Unlike most other Romance languages, Italian retains Latin's contrast between short and long consonants. As in most Romance languages, stress is distinctive. In particular, among the Romance languages, Italian is the closest to Latin in terms of vocabulary. Starting in late medieval times, Italian language variants replaced Latin to become the primary commercial language in much of Europe and the Mediterranean Sea (especially the Tuscan and Venetian variants). These variants were consolidated during the Renaissance with the strength of Italian and the rise of humanism in the arts.
Los Angeles
Commonly referred to by its initials L.A., Los Angeles stands as the most populous city in California and the second most populous in the United States, only surpassed by New York City. It's also one of the world's leading megacities. As the commercial, financial, and cultural hub of Southern California, Los Angeles is home to approximately 3.9 million residents as of 2020. The city is celebrated for its Mediterranean climate, diverse ethnicity and culture, the famous Hollywood film industry, and extensive metropolitan area.
Originally inhabited by the Chumash and Tongva indigenous peoples, the area that is now Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542. The city was established on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, in what was then the village of Yaanga. After the Mexican War of Independence in 1821, it became part of Mexico. Following the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were ceded to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, a few months prior to California gaining statehood. The discovery of oil in the 1890s triggered a period of swift growth for the city. Its expansion continued with the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, which transports water from Eastern California.
