Visa Requirements to live or work in the UAE

Visa requirements for living and working in the UAE depend on your nationality, duration of stay, and the type of work you will be doing. However, there are general requirements that most foreign nationals need to fulfill to obtain a UAE residence and work visa.

1. Entry Permit: Before applying for a residence visa, you need to obtain an entry permit, which allows you to enter the country and begin the visa process.
2. Employment Contract or Job Offer: You need to have a valid job offer or employment contract from a UAE-based employer.
3. Sponsorship: Your employer will act as your sponsor and will be responsible for your visa application process. In some cases, a family member who is a UAE resident can also act as a sponsor.
4. Medical Examination: You will need to undergo a medical examination, including blood tests and chest X-rays, to screen for certain medical conditions.
5. Health Insurance: Most expatriates are required to have valid health insurance coverage from a UAE-based insurance provider.
6. Emirates ID: All expatriates living in the UAE must obtain an Emirates ID card, which serves as an identification document and is used for various government services.
7. Labour Card: If you are employed in the private sector, you need to obtain a Labour Card issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE).

Regarding the translation of documents, you may be required to submit translated versions of certain documents, such as your birth certificate, marriage certificate, diplomas, or professional licenses, depending on your situation. All documents must be translated into Arabic by a certified translation service.

Obtaining a UAE visa without sponsorship from an employer or family member can be challenging, as most long-term visas require a sponsor. However, there are alternative options that you can consider to enter and stay in the UAE:

1. Tourist Visa: A tourist visa allows you to enter the UAE for a short duration, usually 30 or 90 days, depending on your nationality. This visa does not require sponsorship and can be obtained online or through a travel agency. While you cannot work on a tourist visa, you can use this time to explore job opportunities and network in person.
2. Visa on Arrival: Nationals of certain countries are eligible for a visa on arrival, which allows you to stay in the UAE for a short period (usually 14 to 90 days) without obtaining a visa in advance. This option is suitable for visiting the UAE temporarily, but it does not permit you to work.
3. Multiple Entry Visa: This type of visa is designed for business visitors who need to make multiple trips to the UAE over an extended period. A multiple-entry visa can be valid for up to six months, with each visit limited to a maximum of 14 days. You will need an invitation from a UAE-based company, but you will not require a sponsor.
4. Student Visa: If you are planning to study in the UAE, you can apply for a student visa. This visa is sponsored by the educational institution you will be attending. With a student visa, you can live in the UAE for the duration of your studies and may be allowed to work part-time with the proper permissions.
5. Freelancer Visa: Some of the emirates, such as Dubai, offer freelancer visas to self-employed professionals in certain industries. This visa allows you to work as a freelancer within designated free zones without requiring a sponsor. You will need to provide proof of your professional background, industry credentials, and financial stability.
6. Investor Visa: If you plan to invest in a business in the UAE, you can apply for an investor visa. This visa allows you to live and work in the UAE without a sponsor, provided you invest a minimum amount in a business (the specific amount depends on the type of business and emirate). You will need to provide documentation of your investment and comply with other requirements.
7. Golden Visa: The UAE offers a long-term residence visa, known as the Golden Visa, to select individuals who meet specific criteria. This visa is available to investors, entrepreneurs, individuals with exceptional talents, and specialized professionals. The Golden Visa allows you to live and work in the UAE for up to 10 years without requiring a sponsor.
